Community training

Regular training events are run to equip and enable people who want to help build inclusive community. These include Sunday afternoon workshops, Recovery Training Days, and story sharing series. We can also provide specific leadership training on request.

Building Better Communities course information

Four Building Better Communities courses are available to community groups and organisations during 2011 and 2012. Two courses have already been completed. Opportunities are still available to access this training.

Leadership training

A Place to Belong offers specific leadership training for people who want to develop community initiatives - such as support groups - around a specific mental health topic. Read more.

Story sharing series

Occasionally we have facilitated story sharing in different suburbs of Brisbane in partnership with local groups or churches. These involve a number of facilitated meetings, each centred around one person sharing the story of their journey in mental health towards recovery and inclusion. These events help to gather people from a locality to learn about recovery and how we can create helpful responses to others in our communities.

Recovery Day

Once a year, A Place to Belong holds a day-long series of workshops and key-note speakers on topical issues around mental health and recovery. These events are offered at low cost to provide inspiring recovery-oriented training for anyone interested in mental health. Recovery  days are open to all, including people experiencing mental health challenges, their allies, friends and supporters, mental health service professionals, carers, and any members of the community interested in mental health. Typically, Recovery days are held in the second half of the year.

Sunday afternoon workshops

We run bi-monthly Sunday afternoon workshops to inform and train people about recovery and how to build community supports. Typically we hear someone’s story and then have a workshop about how we can contribute to more inclusive communities. These events are informal, interactive and are open to all. People who might come to these events include people who have experienced mental health challenges, carers, friends and their advocates and allies, and people generally interested in mental health.

“It’s been an invaluable experience. Hearing the person's story and then having some pretty open discussion about how our lives can be different has given me hope”.
